Cord Blood Shows Promise as Treatment Option for Infant Stroke
The incidence of stroke in infants and children is a significant health issue that is receiving increased attention in the medical community. According to the National Hospital Discharge Report, the rate of stroke is 13.5 per 100,000 in children
(0-18 yrs)[1], making it the sixth leading cause of death[2]. Stroke can also cause brain injury including cerebral palsy. The incidence of cerebral palsy in this country is 1 in every 278 children[3]. To highlight the importance of this issue, the American Heart Association (AHA) recently issued its first guidelines for physicians on diagnosing and treating stroke in infants and children. To date, treatment options have been limited. However, cord blood stem cells are showing promise as a treatment option for stroke and related neurological conditions like cerebral palsy. More

Hearing Loss Reversed in Animal Study Using Cord Blood
Cord blood stem cells have the ability to help restore hearing, according to a study published last month in Cell Transplantation. In the study, which used animal models, subjects treated with cord blood stem cells showed significant healing to the damaged portion of the sensory hair cells and neurons in the inner ear, while non-treated subjects continued to show serious damage. According to David Eve, Ph.D. at the University of South Florida, "This study provides hope for a potential treatment for the repair of hearing impairments." Hearing loss is the most prevalent birth defect in America today, affecting 2-3 infants per 1,000 births[4].

CBR's Gift Registry ServiceTM Reduces Cost of Cord Blood Banking
Friends and family members are more than willing to help pay for the cost of cord blood banking. Just ask Casey Tabor who signed up for CBR's Gift Registry Service and only paid 50% of the cost to store her daughter's cord blood. "I registered for CBR's Gift Registry Service early in my pregnancy to maximize the time for people to contribute to my daughter Zoe's account," said Tabor. "The service includes an email feature that made it easy for me to invite all my friends and family to contribute." Tabor also used the printable donation cards and inserted them into her baby shower invitations. "In fact, I found that many preferred to donate toward cord blood banking rather than buying clothes for Zoe. In my opinion, cord blood banking is a gift Zoe will never outgrow." Learn More

Chloe Levine on FOX and Friends

According to Jenny Levine, life has started over for her two-year-old daughter, Chloe, and she wants everyone to know about it. Her daughter is among the first in the country to be infused with her own cord blood in a treatment being studied for brain injury. The progress she's made is stunning.

Chloe Levine suffered a stroke before she was born that damaged a portion of her brain. By nine-months-old, it was clear that Chloe was paralyzed on the right side of her body. Since being infused with her own cord blood in May, the majority of Chloe's symptoms have gone away. She is talking, running and catching a ball with both hands — activities her caregivers thought she might not be able to ever do.

Her incredible story was documented recently in The Denver Post and on CBS News.
