CBR Families go to Washington
In July two CBR families traveled to Washington DC and had the honor to visit with President Bush at the White House. The Pell and Schneider families can speak from first-hand experience about the benefits of banking cord blood. Both of their children were treated for neurological conditions through an experimental transfusion using their own newborn stem cells, and both families report a marked improvement in their children's condition. The families had an opportunity to speak with the President about the ways in which stem cell therapy has made a difference in their lives.

New Breakthrough Program Offers Expectant Parents and Physicians a New Option to Save Newborn Stem Cells
A first-of-its kind service called the Newborn Possibilities Program may help provide treatment for the estimated 10,000 babies born in the United States each year with an increased risk of developing a neurological disability.

Launched by Cord Blood Registry -- the world's largest family newborn stem cell bank -- the program is designed to provide autologous, or one's own, umbilical cord blood stem cells (also called newborn stem cells) for regenerative medical treatments. Children with a low Apgar score, who may have an increased risk of developing neurological disabilities, will be accepted into the program. An Apgar score is a routine assessment used at the time of birth to evaluate a newborn's physical condition. All expectant parents in the United States are eligible for this free program and are advised to enroll during the second trimester of pregnancy.

Adult Stem Cell Research Breakthrough Produces Insulin for Diabetics
A scientist in Ireland has made a major breakthrough in the field of adult stem cell research by producing insulin needed by diabetic patients from the stem cells from the umbilical cords of living babies. The result provides real hope for diabetics because the insulin from embryonic stem cells doesn't work as effectively and involves the destruction of embryos.

“We have been able to produce insulin-secreting cells from cord blood, which is pretty much a first, McGuckin told the London Times. McGuckin said that insulin produced from these cells will be more effective for those with diabetes.

“Although people have been able to do it from embryonic stem cells, they are not transplantable because they don't have a tissue match for the patient. Cord blood gives a big advantage,” he explained.

FAQ from our Clients

What is CBR doing to further stem cell research?
Over the past decade, CBR has been a leader in research and development in cord blood banking procedures so that our clients have access to the highest quality stem cell sample. Additionally, here are some of the important research efforts that we've been involved with:

• CBR, along with the Cord Blood Donor Foundation and Stanford University, partnered with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to analyze cord blood for possible predisposing ethnic factors and correlation with the incidence of breast cancer.

• CBR has had three families use their banked cord blood for therapies aimed at improving brain functions following injury or damage, furthering the research into regenerative medicine applications.

• Our Scientific Director, Dr Harris, has conducted cornea research through the University of Arizona to show that newborn stem cells have the ability to differentiate into various tissue types. Newborn stem cells are better than embryonic cells for current applications, and are comparable to embryonic stem cells for research on the ability to create new tissue.

Thank you for trusting CBR with your family's cord blood. We look forward to continuing to provide the highest level of service for you and your family. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Warmest wishes,
Cord Blood Registry

"We have been able to produce insulin-secreting cells from cord blood, which is pretty much a first. Although people have been able to do it from embryonic stem cells, they are not transplantable because they don't have a tissue match for the patient. Cord blood gives a big advantage. We are able to produce many different tissues from cord blood stem cells so we are really the first to rival embryonic stem cells."
Professor Colin McGuckin, Professor of Regenerative Medicine at the University of Newcastle.
As a physician, I am certain the applications of stem cell transplantation are only beginning to come to light. My husband and I feel comfort in banking our daughter's cord blood. CBR made the whole process so incredibly easy and has treated us like family members instead of clients. Thanks for your valuable service and customer friendly attitude... most of all, thanks for the peace of mind!
