New Guidelines on Infant Stroke Released
In its first guidance on stroke in children, the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association stated that stroke in this younger population is not as rare as once believed and, importantly, that the symptoms tend to be different than those in adults. The article mentions that a good number of cases of cerebral palsy may be caused by strokes immediately before or after birth. New research being done today indicates stem cells hold potential in the treatment of brain injury including cerebral palsy and stroke. More
Rhode Island Becomes the 20th State to Enact Cord Blood Laws
Governor Donald Carcieri signed a bill in late June requiring obstetrical professionals and facilities to educate pregnant patients on all cord blood banking options. To date, 20 states covering 65 percent of all U.S. births have cord blood legislation.
